Upcoming Age Group Changes / Calendar Year Changes

Sachem Youth Soccer Club Members,

As you all may be aware by now, The US Soccer Federation (USSF) will be shortly implementing changes to the birth year mandates.  This means that US Youth Soccer competitions will be based on the age group cut offs of January 1 through December 31st of that given year instead of the current August 1st through July 31st age groupings.  Once this is finalized and the dates for this implementation are set, inevitably there WILL certainly be changes to our current travel teams.   Unfortunately, there are a lot of rumors and speculation as to what will happen to a given player or team. However until you hear from the Club Board of Directors it will be purely speculation and may not be how the club will ultimately decides to handle this transition process.

Both the club Board of Directors, along with the LIPS organization have begun to review our current travel team make ups with regards to birthdates and realize that changes will need to be made to most, if not all teams. This process will not be specific to Sachem and will be common to every club and every team. Luckily, being one of the larger clubs on Long Island we are optimistic that we’ll have the resources to facilitate a smooth transition throughout our club. We will also work to make sure every player currently in the Sachem family will have a place to play.

Our club participates in various leagues, LIJSL, ENY, ENYPL, Region1, and EDP - amongst others.  The leagues will all need to conform to this age group mandate, but could possibly have different implementation dates.   Some may require the transition to be implemented beginning August 1, 2016 - Others by August 1, 2017.  Again, until the USSF finalizes their mandate and all the leagues governed by USSF finalize their plans, we cannot start the review of each leagues plan to see how we will need to tailor our decisions and method of compliance. In all cases, we will work towards the implementation as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

In the coming months the decisions on these mandates will be finalized. At that time, the club will hold a general meeting solely on this topic. This will be the opportunity for our teams, players and parents to come in and discuss the clubs plan for compliance.

Obviously, we realize that this mandate has caused a lot of concern and confusion throughout the soccer community. Below, is a link to a document from USSF regarding Player Development Initiatives including some Frequently Asked Questions, which should explain the rationale as to why these changes are being made and how it will affect all levels of play in all age groups and in all clubs.

Thank you for your continued support, if it were not for all our volunteers and members none of this would be possible.

The Birth Year Chart below provides an example on how to calculate age group and birth year. Year minus age group equals birth year. For the purposes of calculation, it is the second year of a split-year competitive season which determines what number should be used to calculate age group. Example: 2018 – U7 = 2011
